Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a Health Canada-approved treatment for adults with chronic migraine - defined as 15 or more headache days per month, at least 8 of which are migraines. It works by blocking the release of pain signals from nerve endings around the head and neck, reducing both the frequency and severity of migraines over time.
Treatment involves a series of small injections around the head, scalp, neck, and shoulders, administered every 12 weeks by a neurologist. Most patients begin to notice improvement after their second or third treatment cycle.
Botox for chronic migraine is covered by many extended health insurance plans in BC.
